HEALTH AND HYGIENE OUTREACH AT DESTINED CHILDREN’S ORPHANAGE

We at the Adeyemi Orphanage Relief, in partnership with the Shades of Us Storytelling Initiative, hosted a hygiene outreach at Destined Children’s Orphanage in Abuja on March 29, 2025. This initiative aimed to empower children—especially young girls, with essential knowledge on personal and menstrual hygiene, delivered through creative storytelling and film.

The outreach wasn’t just a distribution drive; it was a holistic experience built on empathy, education, and engagement. Children learned about handwashing, dental hygiene, and body care through an age-appropriate health talk, while a focused session for girls provided a stigma-free space to talk about menstruation.

A highlight of the day was the screening of FLOW, a short film by Shades of Us, which opened up heartfelt conversations around menstrual stigma, dignity, and identity. The dialogue that followed allowed girls to share personal thoughts and reflect on their experiences in a safe and guided environment.

Every child received a hygiene kit, including essentials like soap, toothbrushes, towels, and for the girls, sanitary pads. The event closed with gratitude from the orphanage staff and a reaffirmation of the shared commitment by both partner organizations to keep supporting vulnerable communities.

The outreach was designed with the following objectives:

  • To promote personal and menstrual hygiene awareness among children.
  • To use storytelling and film to foster open conversations on health.
  • To provide hygiene kits that support children’s daily well-being.
  • To create a safe, stigma-free space for girls to learn about menstruation.
  • To strengthen collaboration between organizations serving vulnerable populations.

The key takeaways are:

  • Children were highly responsive and eager to learn, engaging actively throughout the sessions.
  • The FLOW film helped initiate emotional and relatable discussions, particularly among the girls.
  • Staff requested more frequent sessions, especially those focused on menstrual health education.
  • Integrating storytelling into health education proved highly effective in engaging young audiences.
  • There is a pressing need for sustained menstrual hygiene support and ongoing emotional engagement.

This outreach reminded us of the power of community, collaboration, and compassion. Through education and storytelling, we not only taught hygiene, we uplifted voices and strengthened hope for a healthier, more confident future.

At Adeyemi Orphanage Relief, we believe that every child deserves the dignity of good health and the confidence that comes from understanding their bodies. This outreach is part of our ongoing mission to support orphaned and vulnerable children with practical resources, education, and safe spaces for expression. By addressing the intersections of health, stigma, and storytelling, we aim to create a generation that is not only informed—but empowered.

We are grateful to Shades of Us for standing with us, and to the staff and children at Destined Children’s Orphanage for welcoming us with open hearts.
